I aten't dead
Mar. 5th, 2007 02:27 pmYeah, it's been a long time since I wrote anything. I blame real life on this. Let's take a (very) brief look at what I've been up to lately:
1) Lots and lots of work. The last few weeks have been completely insane, with a few guys gone on holiday, another one about to be fired because of his record of being extremely unreliable, and another two guys cutting their hours due to studies. So guess who's mostly been called on to do extra hours to cover them? On the other hand, I can always say no, and I'm getting plenty of money, so can't honestly complain.
2) Uni. Just went back last week. The workload isn't too heavy at the moment, but it does mean yet more time away from the home computer, and ever since I ran through all my CSE quota last semester I've been paranoid about accessing non-uni sites while in the labs.
3) Final Fantasy 12. Quick review: Disappointing. The graphics engine looks like it was ripped straight from Vagrant Story, the character models look like they were heavily inspired by previous final fantasies (Ashe looks suspiciously similar to Yuna, imho) and while the combat system is good, it brings WoW to mind more than Final Fantasy. And speaking of WoW, Final Fantasy also encourages monster farming, making it more WoW-like still. The story's not bad but to be honest I can't find myself caring enough to play it, especially when I could be spending that time on..
4) Board game design. Damn these things take a long time to physically make. I still haven't finished cutting out the pieces for the simpler of the two games I initially designed. And in the meantime, it's like I've opened this floodgate in my mind that I never knew existed before, and there's no easy way to close it. In addition to the two original games I'm in the middle of making, I have ideas for another 2 or 3 games (one of which I have absolutely no intention of making, and the other feels like it doesn't quite work). In the middle of scribbling down concepts for the latest concept I took a half page out of my notebook to describe a variant on snakes and ladders. And during a lecture when the room was too stuffy for me to concentrate on I found myself madly writing notes for a D&D module, where the initial concept randomly occurred to me while watching my brother play Final Fantasy 12 (so it does have it's good points after all :P)
5) House hunting. Still going. Still got nowhere to go yet.
6) Assorted other social activities, including but not limited to random outings to restaurants, a 21st party, and the Mardi Gras (which was absolutely awesome, and which I may blog about later if I can be bothered).
