Possibly it's a gender based thing? Because I've discussed this sort of thing with both a male and female friend; the male is content to bask in the glow of adulation; the female is more like me, having a "What the hell is wrong with you?!" kind of reaction, combined with the worry of hurting their feelings if it ever gets to the point of the admirer making their feelings explicit.
