And re:lying, I find it interesting that you're equating polite with the problem if the truth gets out. Wouldn't polite be that it's not nice to lie to someone unless it's to flatter them or save face for them? The consequences would then be the pragmatic (and oh-so-NT) reasons for not wanting to lie..
