A request for guinea pigs
Mar. 15th, 2012 03:22 pmI'm currently running a mini experiment on how native speakers of various dialects of English pronounce 'a' in some nonsense words. It only takes a few minutes and would help me out greatly. Results can be either left as a comment below this post or emailed to evil dot jen at gmail dot com. Thanks!
PS: If anyone's interested in the results or context for this, I'd be happy to post them up in a day or three when I've got all the results aggregated.
Tell me a bit about your particular dialect, ie. what country you're from and whether your accent is significantly different to the mainstream accent associated with your country (and if so, how).
Here are some sentences with nonsense nouns, all stressed on the first syllable. For each of these sentences, please read it and indicate how you pronounce the first 'a' in the word (eg. 'a' like in ash, harm, play, about, hair, etc)
1. For my birthday my friend bought me a matha
2. For my birthday my friend bought me a thapa
3. For my birthday my friend bought me a yaso
4. For my birthday my friend bought me a prachath
5. For my birthday my friend bought me a zanul
6. For my birthday my friend bought me a wagub
7. For my birthday my friend bought me a thapi
8. For my birthday my friend bought me a wasu
9. For my birthday my friend bought me a fali
10. For my birthday my friend bought me a vafo
11. For my birthday my friend bought me a gasu
12. For my birthday my friend bought me a shazish
13. For my birthday my friend bought me a tragin
14. For my birthday my friend bought me a janun
15. For my birthday my friend bought me a zaltat
16. For my birthday my friend bought me a thadri
17. For my birthday my friend bought me a rada
18. For my birthday my friend bought me a masti
19. For my birthday my friend bought me a chamo
20. For my birthday my friend bought me a slathak
21. For my birthday my friend bought me a japuz
22. For my birthday my friend bought me a shani
23. For my birthday my friend bought me a glaro
24. For my birthday my friend bought me a masit
Now, for each of the nonsense nouns above, indicate with a number 1-5 how natural it would be for you to pronounce that word with an 'a' like in ash, where 1 is the least natural and 5 is the most.
