Now that I'm all into linguistics, sometimes I find myself getting distracted from what someone is saying by how they're saying it. Case in point: This morning at work some guy who I don't usually speak to was talking to me and I found myself thinking halfway through about what his words were saying about his possible socio-economic background.

I suspect that all that has happened has been a shift from the subconscious to the conscious. That is, in the past, you would have judged your addressor based on language choice without really knowing that you're doing it and without knowing why - whereas now, you are able to critically consider the guy's language cues and your judgment of them. Go, linguistics.
