Fuck that was a depressing movie. I really, really, hate trainwreck movies. Watching people make bad decisions over and over again just makes me wanna slide down in my seat and avert my eyes.
The most depressing part was the Mexican woman's story. It just reminded me so much of the reasons why I get depressed sometimes: Life's not fair. Sometimes you do the best you can and things fuck up anyway. At every single stage she does the best she can to meet all her obligations and she ends up getting deported as a reward. I mean, she practically kills herself trying to save the kids in the desert and all they can say when they find her is how irresponsible she was to leave them in the first place?! Fucking hell..
The story about the Japanese girl resonated with me the most I think. I'm not sure I'm reading it right but to me it was all about the search for love/connection with those around her, and being continually rejected until she meets the detective. On a side note it did somewhat piss me off that we never get to see what her note to the detective said. Was it an apology for her behaviour? A thank you for allowing her the connection she so desperately wanted? An explanation for why she lied about her mother's death?
The story about the Arab kids was just a case of kids being kids, being unlucky and then making their problem worse by panicking. And the story about the American tourists just did nothing at all for me, despite being the 'central' story. It wasn't a trainwreck but I also didn't empathise with their characters at all.
