I have decided what I'll be studying, and in what order for the next year and a half, barring major changes in perspective or whatever. I'm getting more and more excited about going back to uni this year. I guess this means that I made the right choice in transferring programs :)

My new program is... *drumroll*.. Computer Science combined with Arts, majoring in Linguistics and Cognitive Science! and even though I've technically finished all my CS electives I managed to arrange AI for this coming semester under the guise of Cognitive Science (seriously, how many Arts people are going to have the programming background for this? I'm glad for the loophole but all the same it's a bit ridiculous)

Mazal-tov!! I also love being excited about uni. This semester, at Macquarie, I'm doing "Coptic Dialects", "Phonetics and Phonology", and "Grammar, Meaning and Discourse". About bloody time I take some linguistics-related subjects!

(By the way, do you think I should advise the convener that "Grammar, Discourse and Meaning" would better suit the phonological constraints dictated by Panini's Law?)

wooohooo

ahh awesome :). Those subjects sound like you! By the way I think I'm meant to lend you a psych textbook or 2. Who's taking AI this session? Hopefully you'll get a similar project to the one we did which involved using prolog to break up sentences according to strict grammar rules and extracting "meaning" from them.

Alan Blair is lecturing. Me Ali and Hein are taking it :)

The psych textbook isn't urgent but the sooner the better please. I'm feeling ridiculously enthusiastic about uni atm so i want to capitalise on it by reading textbooks and stuff

instead of reading textbooks (which are usually dull and will kill ur enthusiasm)...start playing around in prolog if thats what the course outline suggests you'll be using. You'll like it because you can have a go at creating grammar set for ur own language and then parsing those sentences. Will keep u occupied and happy for the next week or 2 im sure!

nah i'm more interested in reading up on interesting stuff atm than trying to get a head start on coursework :p
The psych textbook is for a course I'm doing in 2nd semester, I just really want it now so i can read the cool parts that relate to cognitive science and revel in how awesome my degree is :p
Also Prolog seems to me to be too impractical for personal projects. I'd much rather learn Python and make it do something cool AND useful.

fair enough. Which psych course are you doing exactly? Is it the intro psych courses or are you talking about the perception and cognition course? Let me know the title of the book you are after and I'll dig it up.

its the perception and cognition course, but since i haven't taken psych 1a the lecturer said to get the first year textbook and read the relevant parts. I dunno what it's called but i seem to remember it being a really chunky hardcover.

i would personally suggest that psych 1a / 1b wont help your terribly much for perception and cognition. What i would suggest is that you become very VERY intimate with APA referencing. My experience with psych is they mark the major assignments very harshly relative to the other aspects of the course. The only other thing you'll need to make urself familiar with is psych report writing style if you are required to do that. I have the perception and cognition books so next time we meet up i can lend you those.
