Hmph, seems like all the cool people have their blogs over at blogger. The final straw came when I just tried to reply to someone's post about linguistics and got barred off because I don't have a blogger account :(

Should I just take my livejournal name and port it over? Should I come up with some new and fascinating moniker? At any rate, I'd better get to it quickly before the post that I want to reply to becomes obsolete

Posts should never become obsolete. With a little luck they'll have selected the setting that enables Blogger to inform them every time there is a new comment. Otherwise, go for it. I'm actually thinking of re-activating my old Blogger account as well. If you are happy to fiddle with the template enough you can actually develop quite an individual look and feel to the blog (which you can't do at all on Wordpress, for example, which is where I am now).

Let us all know if you decide to move!

I was thinking of more of a dual blog, along similar lines to the dual livejournal accounts I used to have. Each one used for posts of a certain nature, with occasional crossposting. I expect my livejournal account would become my frivolous everyday blog while the blogger account would be the home of my pseudo-intellectual and religious musings :)
Also, the post of which I speak in my main entry is Daniel's entry about Hebrew linguistics . For number 4) it's a question of phonology more than Hebrew, try pronouncing the word with the /h/ phoneme vs the /x/ phoneme and you'll see what I mean

Hi Jen,

Luckily, I also read your blog! I agree that blog domains are really quite chauvinist in that they'll only allow comments from people in the same domain (also in LiveJournal I'm limited to posting as "Anonymous"). The only reason I limited mine to people with a Blogger blog was to try to avoid getting spam comments.

Anyways, לגוף העניין ("to the body of the matter"?) I see what you're saying, but there are plenty of ways that modern Hebrew speakers use elision and other techniques to get around difficult-to-say words. For instance, in מההתחלה, the more modern alternative to מלכתחילה - modern Hebrew speakers elide the הs and even the "patach" before the "kamatz" so that it sounds like "me'a'txala". And would "mi'le'*h*at'xila" really be so bad?

Daniel

Ooh, thankyou: you effectively just tipped me off that he has a new post on his site!

I demand you move to Blogger yesterday. All livejournal has going for it to me is the ability to allow only certain people to read certain posts. Apart from that the template editor is limited and posting backdated posts is annoying (why on earth would you need to click "Post is backdated" box when you've entered a previous time and date???).

the ability to exclude people from certain posts sure is powerful though. Does blogger allow different levels of access?

Unfortunately no which is why I keep a tight rein on who can read my blog.

Oh man, I'm a proponent for LJ just because it's the best interactive blog site I've seen. And I like your "pseudo-intellectual" musings, so I hope you keep posting them here no matter what.
